A milestone birthday is a perfectly good reason to hire a magician. It is not automatic permission to make the guest of honor regret knowing everybody in the room.
Before booking a magician for a 30th, 40th, or 50th birthday, ask about the experience your guests will actually have. The right questions cover material, timing, participation, the room, and the person whose name is on the cake.
I’m Timothy Starnes, a Charlotte magician, necromancer, and comedy conjurer. Here’s the checklist I’d want you to use when planning milestone birthday entertainment for adults.
1. Is the material designed for an adult audience?
“Birthday magician” covers a lot of territory. Ask the performer to describe the show’s humor, material, and atmosphere. Adult entertainment can mean witty and conversational, dark and theatrical, or something else entirely.
My shows are for adults ages 18 and up. I perform comedy magic with cards and props, con-game swindles, bar bets, dice magic, and theatrical séance entertainment. We’ll agree on the tone that suits your group.
I’m best known for Timothy Starnes & His Many Night Visitors, my comedy séance show, which I tour along the East Coast. I’m also a trained comedy and bar magician. You can book traditional-style magic without the séance.
2. How will the birthday person be involved?
Tell the performer whether the guest of honor loves attention, enjoys participating occasionally, or would rather share the experience with friends.
Ask how audience participation works and explain any boundaries before the event. “They’ll be fine once it starts” is a prediction, not useful information from a host.
A celebration should fit the person being celebrated. Turning 40 does not create a contractual obligation to be roasted by someone they met eight minutes ago.
Tell me what your friend enjoys, what makes them uncomfortable, and what the group’s humor is like. We’ll discuss the performance with that person in mind.
3. What does the booked time cover?
Ask about performance length and how it fits dinner, cake, speeches, and arrivals. A one-hour visit and a two-hour theatrical experience create different evenings.
I usually spend one to two hours working a client party, with adjustable performance lengths. A séance requires two hours. Parties outside the Charlotte, NC area have a two-hour minimum.
We’ll also confirm arrival and setup timing before booking. If you’re planning a surprise, tell me the reveal time and how the room will be ready. A surprise for the birthday person is charming. A surprise schedule for the entertainer is less helpful.
4. How will guests watch and participate?
Give the performer the actual audience size and describe the space. Ask whether everyone will gather together or how smaller groups will join the entertainment.
I work from a dedicated performance station, where guests can approach and participate on their own terms. Read why I prefer a magic station at private events for the reasoning.
For a séance, I suggest 10–15 guests, or as many as your dining table can comfortably accommodate. For larger celebrations, send the count and layout so we can discuss an appropriate arrangement.
5. What furniture, seating, and sound arrangements are needed?
Ask this before choosing where to put the cake, gifts, and someone’s enormous floral tribute to youth.
My working setup is three chairs and a table, or a coffee table with ample audience seating in front and to the sides. I don’t use a sound system.
Describe the proposed performance area and any music or nearby activity. If you’re hiring a restaurant room or another venue, coordinate the arrangements with its staff. Good sightlines and a comfortable place to gather matter more than an impressive room photograph.
6. What is the rate, minimum booking, and total?
Ask for the full booking details rather than comparing an hourly number alone. Make sure the location, duration, format, and any travel arrangements are understood.
My rate is $500 per hour. Parties outside the Charlotte, NC area have a two-hour minimum, and a séance requires two hours. We’ll confirm the booking total with your event details.
My Charlotte magician pricing guide explains the rate and how to request a quote. These are my terms; another performer may structure a booking differently.
7. What reserves the date?
Ask what agreement and payment are required, when remaining payments are due, and what happens if plans change.
For my bookings, a signed agreement and booking retainer reserve the date. The agreement sets out the payment schedule and event terms. Read it before committing, and ask about anything that needs clarification.
Until then, we’re just flirting with the supernatural.
Start with the person, then plan the show
A useful first inquiry includes your date, venue, guest count, preferred length, and a short description of the birthday person. Tell me whether you’re imagining traditional comedy magic, con games, a séance, or an evening that mixes elements.
